I think they are required to do this because the “landing” isn’t a true landing, as it is cut diagonally into two steps... but still.

But what else would you do? Have each horizontal railing end at the wall? That would make the most sense to me.

Also, swanky hardware.

Diagonal “landings” are stupid anyway.

As you said, there’s probably something in there that says they have to do that, but holy shit, that’s awful. It hurts my brain every time you post one of these. I’m not sure how I would make it better. Hell, I’d probably just remove the damn railing on the quasi-landing, to hell with the code (providing of course I’m not selling the house).

I can only assume this is the result of an unlucky set of regulations.

Extend the top of the bottom rail so the vertical piece goes directly from rail to rail would be better.

I doubt you could curve wood that aggressively, but that’d be neat.

Odd question, but shouldn’t that railing be on the right side of the stair-way? People predominately are right handed, and tend to go up & down stairs on the right side. And you do not fall up a stairway. If a persons falls and reaches out for the railing, they’d have to use their non-dominate hand, which is atypical. I’ve walked through 1000's of homes, and don’t remember seeing such an odd railing install.

It’s in a home, right? That would assume a single stream of people, there is no left/right side.

I’ve never thought about it...but you’re right. Plus placing the railing on the other side would negate the need for that weird “turn”, as the railing would end at the corner and then pick up again at the next. Weird.

It’s too high by code then.

The sensible thing would be to just let the end of the upper and the end of the lower things dive into their respective walls. I wouldn’t be surprised is some pecker-head building inspector made them do it this way though.

The railing is on the right when you’re going up.

I can remember falling down stairs once in my life. I have fallen up them many, many times though.

I’m certain it is. At the very least, the way I mentioned would be less work.

It would be less work for sure. What I would do in my house, is simply let the upper and lower horizontal railings dive into their respective end walls, and not touch each other in any way. I wouldn’t be surprised if some pain in the ass building inspector requires this asinine “solution” instead.

How about bolting in a 4"x4"x10' beam in the corner?

Problem solved! You can PayPal me later Dr. Z.

Man, do you have any idea how much I paid for this mitre saw? How long it was on layaway? How many times i went to home depot just to state at it, unable to take it home? Look at, perfect in DeWalt yellow (tm). I am making this railing with as many cuts as possible, and you will enjoy it!

I recently installed new railings at my in laws house. Your pictures are disturbing. I think k a more finished look would have been a post in the corner.

My parents had a small landing that they hung a painting above going into the basement. Presumably so you could fall down the stairs into the wall and then have the vibration knock the painting direct on top of your head.

Although to be fair they’ve lived there more than 16 years now, and I don’t think anyone has fallen down those stairs yet.

Couldn’t they have just cut a diagnol piece for that? LOL.
